Drop-in event for people looking to stay active during and after cancer treatment
Anyone living in Brighton and Hove who would like to find out more about staying active during and after cancer treatment is being encouraged to attend a pop-up event organised by Albion in the Community (AITC).
AITC’s Brighter Outlook programme offers free, personalised physical activity for people living with and beyond cancer
Research shows that staying active is safe in most cases of cancer and experts point to a range of benefits, including reduced fatigue, improved mood, a decreased risk of recurrence and reducing the risk of disease progression.
Being active can also cut the risk of other health conditions, such as coronary heart disease and diabetes. Previous Brighter Outlook participants also point towards a raft of other benefits from taking part, including support from other people going through the same experience.
More than 300 people in Brighton and Hove living with cancer have already been supported to get more active by the project and the charity is hoping to meet others who would like similar support at its pop-up event on 8 February.
AITC’s cancer rehabilitation specialists will be at the Macmillan Horizon Centre, Bristol Gate in Brighton – just opposite the Sussex Cancer Centre at the Royal Sussex Hospital site – between 9am and 1pm, along with a number of people who have benefited from Brighter Outlook and are keen to share their experiences.
There will also be the chance for visitors to see a Brighter Outlook session take place. Free refreshments will also be available.
Siobhan Meaker, AITC’s health manager, said: “Staying active during and after treatment can be hugely-beneficial in a number of different ways, but we know the thought of physical activity during cancer can seem like a step too far.
“We’ll be at the Horizon Centre to offer you the chance to have a relaxed chat over a cup of tea. We’re not about forcing everyone on to treadmills; there are many enjoyable ways to get and stay active, from walking to gardening, and our coaches are experienced in helping you to find what is right for you.
“If you would like to find out more about how we can support you, your friends or family members, please come along. There’s no pressure to sign-up – and definitely no need to wear to Lycra!”
Brighter Outlook is funded by NHS Brighton & Hove Clinical Commissioning Group and supported by Macmillan Cancer Support.
