A team made up of female participants from Brighton & Hove Albion’s official charity took part in a Football Remembers tournament in Ypres, Belgium, to commemorate the Armistice centenary.

Players were chosen from across Albion in the Community’s (AITC) regular sessions, including its free weekly Premier League Kicks programme, its post-16 football and education courses, and its football development sessions.

The Football Remembers tournament was organised by the Premier League and teams representing a range of other football clubs took part, including Manchester City, Fulham, Crystal Palace, Manchester United and Watford.

The trip to Belgium also included visits to the Memorial Museum Passchendaele 1917, First World War trenches, Tyne Cot Cemetery, and the Menin Gate Memorial for the Last Post ceremony, where players from each team laid a commemorative wreath.

The team also visited UEFA’s Christmas Day Truce monument, Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery and the German war cemetery at Langemark.

AITC’s Carly Farrell and Sarah McAdam led the delegation from AITC and were full of praise for the mature way in which the players embraced the trip.

Ms McAdam said: “The Football Remembers tournament is a fantastic event and it was an honour for us to take part. I was hugely-impressed with the attitude of our players and they represented AITC superbly throughout. They should be very proud of themselves.”

The team from AITC won the tournament, and also received some superb feedback from the Premier League over how the squad conducted themselves during the trip.

Ms McAdam added: “It was brilliant to see our players perform so well on the pitch, but the main focus of the trip was to use football to bring people together and to commemorate the recent Armistice centenary.

“Many of our players had never been abroad before this trip and they have returned home with lasting friendships – not just from within the AITC squad, but also from all the other teams who took part.”
