Almost £1,500 raised in Matt and Jacob memorial game
Charity matches in memory of Matt Grimstone and Jacob Schilt raised a tremendous sum of £1,487 for Albion in the Community.
Matt and Jacob were both aged 23 in 2015 when they lost their lives in the Shoreham Air Disaster on their way to play for Worthing United.
The pair had close ties to the Albion, and Matt worked for the club. They received a heartfelt tribute from fans at the Amex Stadium, and shirts bearing their names still hang on the walls of the North Stand concourse.
Each year a memorial game takes place in honour of Matt and Jacob. This year the Grimstone & Schilt Cup was held in support of Albion in the Community, with all funds raised from the game going towards supporting our life-changing community work.
Before the game, captain Lewis Dunk recorded a video message to help raise awareness of the special match.
Friends and loved ones held a minute of silence before kicking off a day of football at Sussex County Football Association headquarters in Lancing last week.
A match between friends and family of the pair kicked off at 1pm, before Mile Oak faced Worthing United later that afternoon.
Albion legend Guy Butters attended the game on behalf of AITC, handing out the winners’ trophies at the end of the game.
Matt Dorn, CEO at Albion in the Community, was pleased to see such an amazing figure raised.
“We’ve been blown away by the brilliant amount raised at Matt and Jacob’s memorial game,” Matt Dorn said.
“They both hold a special place in Albion hearts and we’re really grateful that their friends and family chose to support us this year.”
