Double the amount of girls playing football in summer 2022
Thanks to the Lionesses’ heroics at the Euros last summer, women’s football has been in the spotlight more than ever.
Everyone was hoping that England’s success in the tournament would lead to more girls being inspired to take up football, and so far that’s exactly what we’ve seen.
Albion in the Community saw a 100% increase in girls football participants this summer compared to the same period in 2021; double the amount of girls wanting to take part in our activities.
On top of this we’ve seen a 73% boost in girls joining our Talent Pathway and Advanced Centres – in other words, girls who are taking a serious interest in football and want to play at the highest level.
This huge boost comes as Brighton & Hove Albion Women celebrate their highest ever number of season ticket sales. More than 1550 people have bought season tickets this year, a 161% increase compared to last season.
With so much interest in women’s football at the moment, AITC CEO Matt Dorn is heartened to see that translate into girls lacing up their boots.
He said: “There’s been such a noticeable increase in girls wanting to get involved since the summer.
“The Euros were a key tournament, both for us and for women’s football as a whole, and we couldn’t be happier at the way it all panned out.
“Seeing double the number of girls getting involved is fantastic, but the 73% increase in signups to our Talent Pathway is a real testament to just how much interest there is out there. These are girls who want to play week in, week out, and maybe even find a career in the game.
“Hopefully this is just the beginning. We know there are still so many girls across Sussex we can still reach in the future.”
