Young amputee footballer meets Albion stars at training
Charlie Hewson, 14, was invited to meet the men’s first team at a training session last Friday (17 May).
Charlie, from Burgess Hill, visited along with his mum and some of his friends to meet his favourite Albion stars.
He recently won the BHAFC Foundation Award at the annual Players’ Awards ceremony; Charlie plays for the Foundation’s amputee football team, and he received the award as recognition for his talent and hard work.
Players and staff from the men’s first team squad were inspired after hearing Charlie’s story during the ceremony, and wanted to invite him down to see a training session.
Charlie got to see some Albion players in action and had a behind-the-scenes tour of the American Express Elite Football Performance Centre, with kit manager Buzz showing the group around his famous boot room.
The group got to meet and have a chat with plenty of Albion stars, as well as head coach Roberto De Zerbi and his coaching staff.
Charlie then had the special opportunity to play on one of the training pitches, testing his penalty skills against Jason Steele.
Phil Broom, disability football lead at the Foundation, said: “Charlie was such a deserving winner of the BHAFC Foundation Award, and this has been another fantastic experience for him and his friends.
“He has an incredible story, and clearly one that resonated a lot with the players and coaching staff. I’m sure he’ll remember this day for the rest of his life.”
