Albion training pitch named in honour of Paul Whelch
Albion directors Derek Chapman and Ray Bloom, honorary vice president Martin Perry and a group of Albion supporters were at the American Express Elite Football Performance Centre for a special ceremony for the unveiling of one of the all-weather community pitches, which has been renamed in the memory of Paul Whelch.
Paul, who passed away in 2017, was a prominent campaigner both to bring the club back to Sussex when it was exiled at Gillingham for two years following the sale of the Goldstone, but also for the new stadium at Falmer.
The founder of Seagulls Over London, Paul also ensured some of the more rigid rules of our former home at Withdean were adhered to by organising the regular litter collections.
Chief Operating Officer Paul Mullen said: “Thanks to Paul’s generous donation, one of our all-weather community pitches now proudly bears his name.
“It was wonderful to meet some of the fans who, like Paul, worked so hard to get the club back to Brighton and then campaigned for the new stadium.
“The community pitch is a fitting tribute to Paul and his family.”
