Albion girls enjoy cup final at St George’s Park

A team of girls representing the Albion travelled up to St George’s Park to take part in the final of the Premier League Kicks Cup.

They earned their spot at the Under-16s Girls final after winning their regional qualifiers earlier this year, joining around 400 other young people for two days of football.

Football clubs from across England and Wales sent young players to represent them at St George’s Park – the home to all of England’s national men’s, women’s and para football teams.

Almost 50 under-16 teams qualified, wearing the kit of their professional football club side and taking part in fixtures refereed by Premier League, EFL and WSL match officials.

The cup is an annual event to celebrate the impact of Premier League Kicks.

Premier League Kicks is the Premier League’s flagship community programme and involves clubs across England and Wales running free weekly football sessions and positive activity to engage and support young people.

Last year, more than 1,600 young people took part in Premier League Kicks sessions run by the BHAFC Foundation.

“This tournament was a fantastic experience for all of the young players who took part,” said Lynsey Hermann, Head of Community Programmes at the Foundation.

“Getting the chance to play at St George’s Park is just incredible for these girls, and it’s a moment I’m sure they’ll never forget.

“Premier League Kicks is an incredible programmes that provides free football and development opportunities for so many young people across the country, it really deserves to be celebrated at events like these.”

As well as the action on the pitch, representatives from police forces, local authorities and local government joined the Premier League and Premier League Charitable Fund at the tournament to explore further opportunities to work together to support young people.

“For 20 years, Premier League Kicks has championed inclusion and created opportunities for young people across England and Wales,” said Premier League Charitable Fund Chief Executive, Alex White.

“The programme has had a transformative impact, providing free access to football for more than half a million young people, right in the heart of their communities.

“By offering safe, supportive spaces to play, Premier League Kicks helps build stronger, safer communities in areas of highest need. The Premier League Kicks Cup brings this mission to life, giving young people the chance to form friendships, engage in positive experiences and unlock their potential on and off the pitch.”
