Make a lasting impact through a legacy gift
A gift in your Will is a powerful way to celebrate your love of the Albion and leave a lasting legacy for the local community who benefit from the work of the Foundation.
Whether you’ve been personally touched by our work or are a lifelong Albion fan, leaving a gift in your Will ensures that we can continue supporting those in need across Sussex.
No matter the size, your gift will make a significant difference. Larger contributions can have a transformative impact, enhancing our care for people across Sussex.
Your legacy can help fund crucial projects: from educational programmes and free football activities for young people to community wellbeing sessions or running our range of disability activities.
What is a legacy gift?
A legacy gift is a gift that someone leaves to a charity in their Will.
The most common types of legacy gifts left in Wills are:
- Residuary gift: the residue (or a proportion of the residue) of an estate after all other gifts, debts and expenses have been paid.
- Pecuniary gift: This is a fixed amount. This type of gift will, over time, devalue with inflation. If you want to future-proof your legacy, you can ask your solicitor about index-linking your gift so its value keeps pace with inflation.
- Specific gift: a particular asset, for example an investment or property.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I leave a legacy gift to BHAFC Foundation?
If you’re drafting your Will from scratch, we recommend consulting a solicitor or professional Will writer. The cost is generally modest and ensures your wishes are clearly outlined, reducing the chance of disputes later.
To kick off the process, simply let your solicitor or Will writer know that you’d like to include a gift to BHAFC Foundation, and they will assist in incorporating it into your Will.
If you’ve already written your Will and want to make a simple change to it, then you can use a legal document called a codicil. A codicil allows you to amend your existing Will without revoking it. It should be completed in the same manner as your Will and kept with it for safekeeping.
However, for substantial changes, you might consider redrafting your Will entirely. This will revoke any previous Wills, so it’s advisable to work with a solicitor or professional Will writer to ensure your new Will is properly drafted and executed.
Should I use any specific wording about the BHAFC Foundation in my Will?
We’ve created some example to help you with wording when drafting your Will. Please always check with your solicitor or professional Will writer to ensure that your wishes will be met.
- Suggested wording if you’re leaving BHAFC Foundation a residuary gift: I give XXX per cent (XXX%) of the residue of my real and personal estate to Brighton & Hove Albion Foundation of American Express Stadium, Village Way, Brighton, East Sussex, BN1 9BL (registered charity no. 1110978) and the receipt of a duly authorised officer for the time being of Brighton & Hove Albion Foundation shall be sufficient discharge for my Executors
- Suggested wording if you’re leaving BHAFC Foundation a pecuniary gift: I give XXX pounds (£XXX) to Brighton & Hove Albion Foundation of American Express Stadium, Village Way, Brighton, East Sussex, BN1 9BL (registered charity no. 1110978) and the receipt of a duly authorised officer for the time being of Brighton & Hove Albion Foundation shall be sufficient discharge for my Executors.
- Suggested wording if you’re leaving BHAFC Foundation a specific gift: I give my XXX [include a description of the asset here] to Brighton & Hove Albion Foundation of American Express Stadium, Village Way, Brighton, East Sussex, BN1 9BL (registered charity no. 1110978) and the receipt of a duly authorised officer for the time being of Brighton & Hove Albion Foundation shall be sufficient discharge for my Executors.
The full legal description that should always be used to describe the charity in a Will is: Brighton & Hove Albion Foundation of American Express Stadium, Village Way, Brighton, East Sussex, BN1 9BL (registered charity no. 1110978).
Do I need to tell BHAFC Foundation if I plan to leave a gift in my Will?
There is no obligation to tell us. However, we’d like to say a big thank you, and knowing about your legacy gift will help us plan for the future. If you’d like to speak to one of the Fundraising team, feel free to call us on 01273 898265 or email us.
What about inheritance tax?
As a registered charity, your gift to Brighton & Hove Albion Foundation could reduce your inheritance tax rate, if 10% or more of your estate is left to charity. For more information on how this might affect you, please see the HMRC website or speak to your solicitor.
