Femi Azeez joins No Room For Racism workshop at Portslade school

Femi Azeez visited a Portslade secondary school to speak to pupils about the No Room For Racism campaign earlier this month.

Femi met with pupils at Portslade Aldridge Community Academy, where he discussed the consequences of racial abuse and how to support someone who has suffered from it.

“It’s very important because unfortunately in today’s age racism is still very prominent,” Femi said, “A lot of work has been done but there’s still a lot more work to do.

“That’s why it’s very important to go to schools like this and educate people so they know how to support people, how to stand up for someone who’s being abused.

“They’re getting the right ideas in their head to then grow up and help other people.”

He was joined by Leroy Rosenior MBE, a former professional footballer and leading anti-racism campaigner (and father of former Albion defender Liam), who also joined in with the workshop.

“Kids always know a lot more than you give them credit for,” Rosenior said, “their interaction was excellent, some of the discussions were brilliant, and they gave some unbelievable answers.

“Their understanding of how to be an ally, how to be a friend, how to be a mate, was excellent. Their determination to leave that classroom and do something about injustices, discrimination, and racism was really powerful.

“They were very excited to see Femi, a lot more excited than they were to see me! And rightly so, he has been brilliant, really interacted with all the kids.

“They’ll go away remembering not only the workshop, but also their experience of meeting a Premier League footballer.”

October is Black History Month in the UK, a time to reflect on the history, culture, and contributions of Black people in this country.

Femi’s visit came shortly before the Premier League’s No Room For Racism campaign, which comes as part of the league’s efforts to promote diversity across all areas of football, tackle discrimination, and support those within the game who suffer discriminatory abuse.
